Poll – majority want New Zealander as next head of state

A Curia poll commissioned by New Zealand Republic indicates that 55% prefer a New Zealander as Head of State, elected by either two-thirds of Parliament or popular vote:

“What is your preference for New Zealand’s next Head of State out of the following three options?”

  • The next British Monarch becomes King of New Zealand – 39%

  • New Zealand has a New Zealander as Head of State elected by a two-thirds majority in Parliament – 17%

  • New Zealand has a New Zealander as Head of State who is elected by the popular vote – 38%

It’s not surprising to see strong Māori for a New Zealand head of state, and also that younger people prefer a New Zealander.  It is likely that over time support for a New Zealand head of state will increase, especially the reign of the current Queen of England (and New Zealand) is over.

The poll was conducted between 8 and 24 April from 15,000 random nationwide voting-age New Zealanders, with 1,000 surveyed weighted by age and gender. The margin of error was +/- 3.1%

    hardly a surprising result.

Royalty belongs in another century…it is the anti thesis of egalitarianism and equality.

Isn’t having any kind of ‘head of state’ at all, the antithesis of egalitarianism and equality?

Why do we need a Head of State as well as a PM ?

There is good reason to have a diffusion of power. However, any change will result in a reduction of the power of the PM and cabinet. We will more likely get a President like in Ireland where it is a symbolic position filled mostly by random ex-political hacks like Mary McAleese.

            Same as Governors general.

These ‘multi choice ‘ polls are usually done like that to get the numbers most like what the people paying for the poll want.
Since we are a ‘Dominion with a monarch ‘ we would have to chose a different system.
have they asked that question directly?

If the poll was for individuals William might still come out on.top. just like everyone wanted a new flag until they had to choose one.

Why do you think doing it in private is better?

He’s a family man. Thinking that there is anything untoward in a father who displays affection to children shows a very odd sort of mind indeed.

Maybe after another 3-4 terms in Govt. Jacinda can become ‘Madam Prez. of Aotearoa’ 😀

btw; I think after the Key-Flag Ref. failed.. the idea of moving to a republic, went ‘off the boil’ BUT is still simmering on the back-burner (maybe after Queen Lizzie passes or retires ?) it may reemerge ? :/

The idea of a British head of state seems more and more irrelevant as rapid immigration changes the ethnic and cultural background of the nation. Although some people will see that as a reason to keep the current system as a rock to hold on to in changing times.

This doesn’t make a lot of sense. Didn’t those people come here because of what NZ is, or did they come to change it more to be like were they came from?
