What is going on with British men in the political class?
They mostly look like they’d be more comfortable dressed in their wive’s clothes.

English eccentricity at it’s best. Unfortunately our closed society of rugby, beer, conformity and the bash for poofs would never allow such displays of individuality amongst our ruling class.

Isnt Farange wearing a smoking jacket- while smoking?
I would accept different styles of clothing, far batter for that than US politicians obsession for Golf. Why not fly fishing, or something like Helen Clark and cross country skiing.

The closed society of rugby, beer, conformity and the bash for poofs has long gone, if it ever existed, and NZ doesn’t have a ruling class.

Homosexual sex (between men) has been legal for decades in NZ, we have gay MPs and gay Ministers, gays can marry and have been able to for several years.

I don’t know any people who fit those stereotypes (rugby, beer, gay-bashing etc) and can’t imagine any country that does have a ‘ruling class’ having one that is anything like this !

What does ”far batter for that than US politicians obsession for Golf” mean (if anything) ?

Counting in the EU elections is underway now, it is predicted that The Brexit Party will win about 37% of the vote in the UK, this will most likely make them the largest single national party grouping in the European Parliament.

Across Europe it is expected there will be gains for fringe parties, with anti-EU and pro-environment parties expected to be the winners out of it.

In France Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party is tipped to beat Macron’s movement based on exit polls, and in Germany ruling parties face the worst result in history as AFD improves their 2014 result. Merkel’s CDU were the largest single national party in the European Parliament, but are expected to poll at less than 30%, with her coalition partners falling behind the Greens.

The Centre Right bloc across Europe is expected to remain the largest bloc, but Eurosceptic parties are expected to perform strongly across Europe. The increase in Eurosceptics in the European Parliament is unlikely to deter the European elites and their plans for greater union, but it could make it a little uncomfortable for some.

This comes as the Yellow Vest movement led to violent protests in Brussels today, showing continued dissatisfaction with the EU.

Almost half the French votes have been counted.

Le Pen’s party is on 27%
      Macron’s party is on 20%

It is expected Le Pen’s party’s lead will narrow as more results come in, both the leading parties are projected to get 22 seats each.

” Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party is tipped to beat Macron’s movement based on exit polls’
based on last election NR won the largest share too. Not really a big deal, same for UK , wasnt the Farangs Ukip or Brexit party the biggest party there too?
France has changed from having regional based constituencies to having a single national constituency which may or may not make much difference.

Can anyone elaborate in how these E.U elections work and how significant the result is.

The EU elections work on a PR system with each country broken up into a number of areas and a number of MEPs allocated based on the population. Not too dissimilar to how Aus elect their senate.

As to the significance, in the overall scheme of things not very in terms of EU policy making as that is done from the Commission. In terms of the ‘election’ of the new European Commission President it could be significant. At best it will just mean everything continues, at worst there will be a little bit of irritation to the EC and others in the EU.

In saying that, if there is a significant Eurosceptic bloc that will be significant in showing the rising euroscepticism in the EU, but the general feeling is that those in the EC and with power will ignore it.

The European Parliament isn’t like ours, it doesn’t rule the EU, and doesn’t determine the presidents generally.

France has changed from regional based lists to a single national constituency this election.

The England part UK doesnt use Australian style numbered ranked voting ( they do use STV – numbered ranking in Northern Ireland. )
England voters chose a party vote like we do ( or an independent), the D’Hondt method then is a proportional count for multiple seats. The partys are not ranked by voters

After the last election UKIP ( which morphed in Brexit party) had largest number of seats nationwide,24. Cons 19, LAB 20 lib dem 1 Greens 3, SNP 2.

It has been reported that the Greek PM has called a snap national election in response to the EU election results tonight.

Nothing was expanded on. Will see if more information comes through tonight.

The North East is the first UK area to declare, 3 seats up for grabs.

    Brexit Party 39 % (2 seats)
    Labour 19% (1 seat)
    Lib Dems 17%
Greens & Conservatives not worth worrying about.

At the previous EU elections in 2014 Labour held 2 seats and UKIP 1 seat.

A clear message to Labour that the people of the Northeast are not happy at their flip flopping on Brexit.

With only 3 seats one seat either way means nothing in the scheme of things, proportional voting means the last seat awarded it can be a close choice between parties when doing the counting method ( d’Hondt?)

Eurosceptic parties are expected to enjoy their best results.

    From the Telegraph:
“Eurosceptic parties are set to enjoy their best ever results in the European elections this evening as voters flock in their millions to vote for populists and abandon the two groups that have dominated EU politics for the last 40 years.

A total of 171 MEPs are expected to be returned from eurosceptic parties across the EU, according to preliminary results based on exit polls and surveys of voting intention.

But with the seats split between three separate political groups, the populists will be unable to directly alter the push for closer EU integration from the dominant Europhile parties.

In the 2014 European elections, 155 MEPs from anti-EU parties were returned to the European Parliament. Early predictions suggest that turnout had increased in comparison to 2014 to between 49 and 52 percent across Europe, arresting a steady decline that had continued ever since the first EU election in 1979 and the highest for 20 years.”

Strangely the Uk doesnt seem to have an official government website that I can find that list actual party /candidates and raw votes for them. The Election Comission does everything else apart from counting votes
Its seems the BBC is main source for vote tallies ? Really strange
