It is budget day in Parliament. I don’t see any point in saying much until we know what is in it.

/ 30th May 2019Im guessing the journos are circling (vultures ?) & Natl MPs are ‘chomping at the bit’ 😀
Kitty Catkin
/ 30th May 2019Champing at the bit, not chomping.

/ 30th May 2019Tanks and trees
Duker
/ 30th May 2019Tanks ? We havent had those since national offloaded them in the mid 90s.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanks_of_New_Zealand#FV101_Scorpion
The Orion replacement (P8)was signed up by national in secret before the last election for some reason.
Alan Wilkinson
/ 30th May 2019Not much excitement is there? More spending, let’s see how productive it is. Building schools while teachers strike is a bit ironic. Indexing benefits to wages is reasonable but the same should happen to tax brackets.
No mention of Kiwibuild then?
Duker
/ 30th May 2019More spending ….it wins elections ask Scott Morrison as he did the biggest spend up since Whitlam
Alan Wilkinson
/ 30th May 2019Oh really? Maybe it loses them better:
https://www.noted.co.nz/currently/world/scott-morrison-australian-pm-stormed-country/
Duker
/ 30th May 2019You do know they have nearly doubled national debt in last 6 years, long after the GFC and no earthquakes.
Alan Wilkinson
/ 30th May 2019Morrison first budget was 2016 and conservative. He was not a big spender at all.
Duker
/ 30th May 2019Late 2013 was first year of liberal- Nationals coalition….seems they were like Key and borrowed more than all previous governments and had the gall to pretend they were low spenders.
Whitlam by comparison had one yr of small deficit and the others were in surplus
Alan Wilkinson
/ 30th May 2019Let’s take the net-debt-to-GDP ratio.
It rose from about 11.3% in September 2013 (when the Coalition was elected) to 18.3% in July 2016, at which point the ratio roughly stabilised. The net debt to GDP ratio now stands at 18.6% and is predicted to fall in the next few years.

Alan Wilkinson
/ 30th May 2019See also the chart in that link: Australia’s net debt, 2001-02 to 2018-19
Shows the Howard govt reduced debt and then Labor skyrocketed it.
Ray
/ 30th May 2019Bit of a fizzer.
Indexed benefits is good and probably will not more for child poverty than all the rest of the windbagging.
Kitty Catkin
/ 30th May 2019I doubt it, selfish parents will use it for their own things and expect other people to spend money on the children.
Kitty Catkin
/ 30th May 2019It sounds all right until you see how many years it will be before it starts and how little it is.
Zedd
/ 30th May 2019for all those on the benefit.. it will be worth saying “THANK YOU” to the Govt.
Natl went on about their one-off $25 increase in 9 years (?), with their focus on bashing & booting them off in record numbers
This Govt. are set to pass this amount, in their first term.. including the ‘winter energy payment’ 🙂
Gerrit
/ 30th May 2019Why does it cost $35M to investigate new Cook Strait ferries for KiwiRail? seems hugely excessive just for an investigation or feasibility study.
“More than $1 billion will go to support KiwiRail’s redevelopment, including $35 million to investigate purchasing new Cook Strait ferries”
https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2019/05/live-updates-budget-2019-to-be-released-after-week-of-drama.html
Someone is Gilding the Lilly. How could Peters accept this at face value? Where is the common sense to figure out that the cost is way over the top just to investigate Cook Straight ferry options?
Alan Wilkinson
/ 30th May 2019The big accounting/consulting firms don’t come cheap. Especially for governments.
Duker
/ 30th May 2019More likely it’s the ‘deposit’ on a new order, that’s how it works for lots of big ticket items.
Lots of smoke and mirrors with government funding unfortunately, like the $2 bill number used for Orion replacements, ye the US Navy at beginning of year announced their buy of 19 planes like this for US and other countries …total cost US$2 bill…for 19 planes.
Yes there’s extra costs on top of that… But there’s a lot of bumpf in the numbers mentioned
Zedd
/ 30th May 2019i was disappointed hearing at least one journo. making more of a big deal out of the ‘leak’ rather than the ACTUAL content in the ‘Well being’ budget.. are they SERIOUS ?!
*how narrow minded (IMHO) 😦
Gezza
/ 30th May 2019Mahklouf dropped the Finance Minister right in the grotney pudding. He’s been refusing all comment. What happens to Mahklouf is going to be an item of intense media & public interest.
Maggy Wassilieff
/ 30th May 2019I don’t think he gives a damn.
He jumped ship weeks ago.

Gezza
/ 30th May 2019Hope they ask Robertson for an up to date reference.
Zedd
/ 30th May 2019Winston summed it up by saying (paraphrased) that ‘the reason NZF went with Labour.. to focus on the well-being of ALL kiwis !’
Natl still seem to support the nonsensical ‘trickle down’ economy.. tip all the money in the TOP & finger-crossed it may actually trickle to the bottom… IF they dont spend it all in the interim
Pete George
/ 30th May 2019“to focus on the well-being of ALL kiwis” and some horses and some horse owners and some fishery companies.
Duker
/ 30th May 2019To you know how many people rely on the ‘horse racing industry’ ……it’s not my cup of tea but there you are
Alan Wilkinson
/ 30th May 2019Where do you think the money comes from to “tip in at the top”, Zedd? Trees? The Beehive? The Reserve Bank printery?
It comes from the work and initiatives of New Zealanders. Without that your bank balance in NZ$ is worthless. So the only way to get any money to tip anywhere is to take it from those who make it. Doing so is one way to discourage them from working. Giving it to those who work little or at all will disincentivise them also from working.
That is the real trickle down theory as practised and perfected by the Left.
Corky
/ 30th May 2019What I saw on the news.
1-Billy Bunter trying to outdo Broad Way, with shouting; exaggerated body movements and passe rhetoric. When he finished`strutting, the PM stood and said: ‘well that was uplifting.’
Yep, even the PM was able to score off Bridges.
2- A solo mum with 9 kids who said she had no money at the end of the week after feeding the kids. Hmmm. I wonder why?
3- The failure to mention $7 million to help Maori kids paint.
4- $30 million for gender reassignment surgery.
5-The delicious spectacle of Labour being dealt to by the teacher unions.
All in all…a big fail for National…apart from some stunning outfits Paula has been wearing over the past few days. I loveD her ”black number.” Paula makes the PM look so dowdy..and as fort the PM’s hair… she really needs to have a talk with Paula in the ladies.
Duker
/ 30th May 2019You are such a liar , as usual.
$3 mill for gender surgery not $30 mill, and like these things that would be over 4 yrs health spending would be some $8 bill per year?
Corky.
/ 30th May 2019At least you are awake. And of course I would lie, wouldn’t I? Touche, as per your comments this morning on another thread.
Gezza
/ 30th May 2019He’s not fibbing about Memory Brown, the woman they picked out of a queue outside a Work & Income office who said she had nine kids to feed. I dunno why tv1 does this. But they usually find women with 8 kids.
Alan Wilkinson
/ 30th May 2019Labour has a good supply to feed the media I am sure. They mightn’t know how to search a website but they have no peers in finding folk who want more money.
Gezza
/ 31st May 2019That’s the point though. When tv1 go looking for extreme examples like this, which never explains anything about these women’s circumstances (like, where are the fathers? Are these women looking after other people’s children too? Is there some understandable resason they’ve ended up in this situation?) middle New Zealand, struggling along, working, making sure they can afford to house, feed, clothe & educate their own couple of kids, goes:
“How the hell does this woman end up a solo mum with 9 bloody kids? What kind of a life can those kids have even with someone picking our back pockets to pay for them? And if picking our back pockets to pay for them is the answer, what’s to stop more young women from deciding to be solo mums with 9 kids? And how is it fair expecting us to pay to house, feed, clothe & educate these kids when we’re finding it tuff enuf paying our own way with ours?”
Tvnz might make the Children’s Commissioner & themselves feel happy & virtuous with such items but I think they probably piss off a lot more voters than they win over.
Corky
/ 31st May 2019Damn straight.
Blazer
/ 31st May 2019‘ And how is it fair expecting us to pay to house, feed, clothe & educate these kids when we’re finding it tuff enuf paying our own way with ours?”
we know its not the 9 kids fault so what alternative is there?
Gezza
/ 31st May 2019There isn’t one. My issue is with tvnz’s going looking for cases like this & presenting them to viewers with no details, perpetuating stereotypes & potentially advertising this as a worthwhile lifestyle.
Duker
/ 31st May 2019They never mentioned back in 2016 the ‘surprise boost ‘ to Ballet funding.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/arts/80430247/budget-2016-arts-fundings-surprise-boost
Bill English, the real Wellington bureaucrat one , not the phoney Southland farmer ( he left for Wellington boarding school at 13) is the ballet lover
