It’s hard to know what Trump is trying to do with trade.
This week he threatened Mexico with tariffs, and he is now ending trade privileges with India.
This probably won’t strengthen his hand with China.
China also talking tougher.

/ 2nd June 2019There are halfwits everywhere, Lurchy…even on this blog. There’s everything to see here. Trumpy has put all his chips on other nations blinking first. If they don’t, it becomes a matter of attrition…followed possibly by real war.
Trumpy will either become the greatest ever US president that ever lived..or he will go down in ignominy as the man who destroyed the US and the world.
Say what you like…Trumpy is certainly doing something…unlike other presidents.

/ 2nd June 2019Something? Even you dont know what hes doing …. trying to raise his approval ratings, maybe
I think hes found the ‘only thing can can do unilaterally’ – pull the Trade lever and see what happens.
Its the sort of approach a bully uses ..
Kitty Catkin
/ 2nd June 2019I can’t agree with you, Lurch,
Quarter or eighth, perhaps…..

/ 2nd June 2019Aljazeera tv noted a few days ago that one of the ironies of Trump’s recent visit to Japan where he, as usual, complained about their trade imbalance & was looking to negotiate, among other things, better access for American beef into Japanese markets, was that, if he hadn’t pulled America out of the CPTPA, they’d already have it now.
Trump isn’t just using US control of international finance markets to bully other countries, he’s now using trade & tariffs as blunt political/diplomatic cudgels too. Making America Grate like nobody’s ever made America grate before.

Good morning Vietnam? Don’t forget India and Brazil.. the West needs to get there fast and build economic structures that only support our graven way of doing things.
Kitty Catkin
/ 2nd June 2019I imagine that Indians and Brazilians would be as resentful at the West invading them and taking over their economy as the West would if India and Brazil did it to them.

/ 2nd June 2019We should all hope he succeeds, remove the person from what is happening and the US is using access to its mighty consumers as leverage to level the trade playing field. The US is doing what the WTO should do but hasnt managed. Its about time.
The Mexican thing is different but Trumps hands have been tied by Pelosi and a few liberal judges and made their border impossible to manage and in any other functioning country the politicians would have fixed this. The US has a 100 thousand a month coming into the country over the Southern border from literally every country on earth with no security or screening. A President doesnt have too many powers and Congress wont help.
Corky
/ 2nd June 2019You have the Mexican thing right, Dave.
Kitty Catkin
/ 2nd June 2019100,000 a month is 1,200, 000 a year. 12,000,000 every decade.
Literally every country on earth ?
Have you any idea how many countries there are on earth ?
David
/ 2nd June 2019Thats the numbers and it was 120 countries so not every country then, I do apologize.
The world is heading to the southern border and the judges have tied border securities hands and the Democratic Congress wont allocate any more money or pass any laws to stop things.
The Dems and the Republicans are quite happy to have this continue its a good fundraiser and wedge issue.
