https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ New updated figures and Spain is following Italy,s path but the rest of the world seems to be doing pretty well in comparison. The UK is doing little testing and advising folk if you have the symptoms stay home and if you dont come right in a week give us a ring.
The stats on infections are going to be pretty much meaningless soon with just the capture of people with severe symptoms and deaths meaningful. 80% of people seem to have nothing more than a bad or mild cold.
There are concerns over people who are on blood pressure and diabetic medication which seem to have make the virus worse, in China the mortality rate was near 50% in poor cohorts that were on ACE Inhibitors and 30% for folk on diabetes drugs.
And this: https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/03/did-experimental-drug-help-us-coronavirus-patient although its only a couple of people the anti viral medication is showing a little bit of a glimmer of hope.

”There are concerns over people who are on blood pressure and diabetic medication which seem to have made the virus worse.”

That’s interesting. Doctors withhold ( or they should) blood pressure medication when a patient has an infection. Seems the same should apply for the Coronavirus, although that would become a balancing act in very ill patients.

Our PM was feral in her interview with Mikey. She made it clear she will deport tourists who don’t self isolate. And she’s being advised of all powers available to her to take care of problems that arise. Have no fear, Lurchy. Your PM is growing up fast. I don’t think people are much interested in Simon and National and politics anymore….unless products and money start dwindling.

We could set him up in a little detention camp for a couple of years. He doesn’t need to be charged with anything or have a criminal history.

Contacting Australia to get the true oil on how to establish such a centre would be a good idea, they seem to have knowledge and experience of such things. I wonder how long it would take for the good folk in the Australian Government to get a little excited about such a move.

HIV offence should you infect another person, the offence is considered to be a felony with possible repercussions including a year or more in prison, up to $50,000 in fines and compulsory sex offenders registration.

Registration would not apply. Nah if he’s one of those Australian who don’t give a s..t for Kiwis here or in Australia make him sweat.

Dr Siouxsie Wiles inadvertently shows the gaps in medical science. The vaccination/ herd immunity defence is interesting. Like Michelle Dickinson ( nano sheila)and Clive Matthew-Wilson, we see too much of this woman. There are way better scientists in NZ then these two in my opinion. The problem is they aren’t good looking and don’t have pink hair.

Who says there is a ‘plan to let it spread’ in UK ? Someone may have ‘suggested it’ but it doesnt make sense in the medical case as the normal precautions are to slow the spread.
Herd immunity is about vaccinations at 90% + . There is no herd immunity by saying 50% catching Covid-19. Thats why I think its complete nonsense from the Brit Media

Very curious who was the source of this nonsense which like some news spreads because its too good to check that its true.

Herd immunity is achieved by vaccination only, letting people catch it isnt herd immunity especially for a constantly mutating virus like for flu and CV-19

I heard it too (about a week ago).. with the plan to get antibodies & create a vaccine, but has not been echoed since ??

btw: I also heard that one Natl. MP was advocating ‘panic buying/hoarding’ which seems to have also been ‘silenced’ since.. along with the rhetoric about ‘we’d all better vote Natl. the ‘safe pair of hands’ who can save us all from Jacinda & the loony left’ (paraphrased).. perhaps reality has finally hit home !?

Herd immunity is nonsense in this situation , if you have a vaccine its a sensible target to aim for . But dont have one, so social separations is the way to go.

Fist let’s start with Dr Siouxsie Wiles.

        This from Wiki:

”Wiles is active in the skeptical movement having received the Skeptic of the Year Award from the New Zealand Skeptics in 2016 and attended several NZ Skeptic Conferences. She has also spoken out against anti-vaxxers and other public health related issues”

That for me excludes her from being taken seriously from MY PERSPECTIVE. To be a professional skeptic demands that you only believe in certain criteria. Anything that is ‘to far out,’ is never considered for serious review. In other words these people, deep down, think they know it all. They are bigots of the first water… no matter whether they are mediocrities, or go on to greatness.

Maybe deep down those people do think they know it all.
From THEIR PERSPECTIVE they might. That doesn’t mean they don’t know it all. Or do.

I was interested in your ranking of Dr Siouxsie Wiles as if there is a list to refer to or if you’re so familiar with the particular work of scientists you’re a good judge to rank her. I see she has a PhD in microbiology. It could be that in her field she is the ‘best’ scientist in NZ and could even be a world authority in it. Her research is pretty widely quoted.

I’m sure she’s highly capable but more importantly is a ‘go to person’ for the media. That’s probably enough. She’s not advising the government and is useful and tote to people like Hosking who would otherwise have free reign

Fair enough. But from MY PERSPECTIVE she is an non entity for the reasons outline.
No scientist should ever be a professional skeptic….inquiry before skepticism is a must.

Slater back in Court , this time its appeals from both him and Craig
    This caught my eye
“In the Court of Appeal in Wellington today, Slater’s lawyer, William Akel, said the judge was right not to order Slater to pay damages.
He said the alternative was to pay “a pittance” to Craig, which would be “worse” for him.
Akel also said the judge “saw, listened, and evaluated” Slater and “concluded that he’s not a compulsive liar, that he does try and uphold standards of balance and accuracy”.

Akel is one of the more expensive ends of Barrister St and has vast experience in defamation etc
Wonder where the money came for that appeal …probably an up front payment.

What a difference a day makes. Yesterday was a fairly laid back day at the supermarket. Today it was packed by 7am. Some folk are stressed out with mouths wide open and eyes staring. Some even forget to get a trolley or basket, so they have armfuls of produce while doing a continuous juggling act.

Big moving items at my supermarket:

    1- Toilet tissue.
    2-Pastries
    3- Cordial
    4- Dishwashing liquard.
5- Paper hand towels ( probably substituted for non available toilet tissue)
    6- Rice and noodles.
7- Paracetamol ( near the checkout. Being scooped up by the handful).

You may not have been in a tent, but you must have been there before the shop even opened, which is utterly bizarre if this story is true. You would have been the one with wide open mouth and staring eyes, gaping at what people were buying.

Unless they are a very odd lot where you live, the whole story sounds too strange to be true.

My supermarket opens at 6am. So much for the oracle cat. That she finds my list surprising makes me believe she be house bound. If a shelf is empty it probably means the product has been sold. If you are in a line of 20 people..chance are you can’t miss what people are buying.

It must be the only one that does; 7am is the usual time.

I’d hate to have so little to think about that I’d look along the queue into people’s shopping baskets and trolleys..and make notes of what’s in there. Do you take photos or just use a pen and paper ? How do you see what a person who’s 20 ahead of you’s buying ? Periscope ?

What’s surprising is that you seem to spend so much time in supermarkets looking at other people’s shopping…I can think of few duller ways to use my time.

I AM surprised that no one tells you to mind your own business, if you really do this.

What One News failed to ask or mention was that Seymour had stated he had no problem with benefit increases on a short term basis.

MP Brendan Horan expelled from NZ First

NZ First leader Winston Peters today expelled Horan from the party after receiving “substantive material” that caused him to lose confidence in the Tauranga-based list MP.

Horan has released a statement through his lawyer denying any wrongdoing amid allegations over his late mother’s finances.

Paul Mabey QC said the MP’s expulsion had come without notice and he had no intention of leaving Parliament.

Former NZ First MP Brendan Horan cleared by police after Winston Peters complaint

Former NZ First MP Brendan Horan has been cleared by police after a complaint was made to the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) by party leader Winston Peters.

The complaint, which was made in December 2012, alleged Horan had misappropriated funds from his late mother’s bank account and the complaint was referred to the police for investigation.

“There has been a comprehensive investigation by the Western Bay of Plenty criminal investigation branch into these allegations over the last two years, including a review of the file by senior detectives.

“After consideration of all relevant information and the Solicitor General’s prosecution guidelines, police have determined that there is insufficient evidence to charge any person with a criminal offence,” Detective Inspector Mark Loper said.

That’s not a very good model.

There’s a few more stories relating to NZ First MPs that also look quite dented.
