Interesting to learn that we have a CBA of a persons worth, compliments of Pink David.
    2 million is the figure.
The venal right ,using dollar value, economic forecasts for GDP,divided by fatalities… then make conclusions around whether a viable proposition exists!
Using this CBA equation we should have firing squads, think of how dramatically GDP would increase!

    Wonderful world,beautiful …people.

Hes taking his position too far, but we already have some 30-60 who die from influenza related illnesses every year which we tolerate. Yes we have vaccines and ant viral drugs for treatment other wise it would be much higher toll.
It too arrives as a virus from overseas, and spreading could be sharply reduced by social isolating measures in shops and businesses, may be even a level 2 or 3 lockdown ?
You already know we dont do any of those things, other than make vaccines available, which dont become so useful for the very elderly and those with chronic conditions…sound familiar.

In the US because of their insurance based health system 20,000 plus deaths from flu is normal and some years it could be double or more of that. [Their population is about 66 x ours). Those numbers dont catch all flu deaths that occur at home or in private care facilities, Ive seen some estimates of a 45% or so uncounted increase.

Italy with it’s public health care system had 26,000 or so die in a bad flu year. Same in the UK with it’s glorious NHS.

US numbers much much higher than ‘official’ numbers because the sick elderly dont go to hospital to die, UK because of the NHS has a much better estimate of actual numbers as GPs see patients who are unwell and would send them to Hospital with no concerns over who would pay.
Italys heath system varies by province with the hardest hit provinces the ones who had embraced private health providers. Have you got the numbers for the French health system …. Switerland has 8.5 mill people and 1000 covid 19 deaths and they have a sort of compulsory health insurance ?
No need to over state your case….just as some here go ‘how dare you ‘compare’ it to the flu’

“US numbers much much higher than ‘official’ numbers because the sick elderly dont go to hospital to die, UK because of the NHS has a much better estimate of actual numbers as GPs see patients who are unwell and would send them to Hospital”

This is an assumption. A fact is the UK is over reporting Covid-19 deaths as a matter of policy.

“Italys heath system varies by province with the hardest hit provinces the ones who had embraced private health providers.”

It is also the wealthiest region, with the best health care by Italian standard. The difference between north and south are not down to the mechanics of health care delivery.

If you want to criticize the US system, then it’s very likely one reason the deaths are high in NY, that it’s the people who don’t have insurance, or poor insurance are not presenting early enough to allow intervention to reduce the likelihood of death. That group also has a high percentage of undertreated pre-existing conditions that make them vulnerable. That does not explain why it’s largely affecting NY

Note that the provision of health care to people in NY is the best in the world, the system is far better resourced than any other, far, far better than either Italy or UK, and vastly better than China.

I’ll dare to compare it to the flu, just for fun! This happened two years ago, and no one really noticed.

“The killer flu outbreak is to blame for a 42 per cent spike in deaths across England and Wales, statisticians claim.
Government figures reveal 64,157 people died in January – significantly higher than the death toll of 45,141 recorded in December”

Deaths from cardio vascular diseases peaks during winter as well, far out numbering winter flu. Its a mistake to give the flu complete blame

Its another one of the realities that those ( climate alarmists) who talk about ‘killer heat waves’ ignore

Oh, Dear. This chap has to go. Paula needs to become our new hope. A tough call given the international press are fawning over Jacinda again. She’s well on her way to becoming NZ greatest PM. A hollow accolade in my opinion, given circumstance, not talent, is behind her meteoric rise to fame.

I say ! Steady on old chap. Might be getting a bit carried away there !

Still just a slip of a girl having a moment of history. Only 3 years as PM & we have yet to see any major positive impacts of her legacy on the country as a hole.

Very good on the PR side of things. Not so hot on the house-building front & a few others her fiercist critics can no doubt drag out of their grab bags of complaints.

Weren’t you saying something SIMILAR the other day.? Not the greatest, but one of the more remembered PMs?

”Still just a slip of a girl having a moment of history. Only 3 years as PM & we have yet to see any major positive impacts of her legacy on the country as a hole.”

Her many faults may have been absolved thanks to circumstance. All she has to do is look half intelligent when briefing the nation – something she is doing well. No matter which way history spins this time period, it will always come back to Jacinda. Maybe what comes after will garner more scrutiny…and that will probably be equally about National.

You’re right : I forgot. But I meant that really in terms of how she handled the Covid-19 crisis by locking the country down & being prepared to consistently front the media for that as being the woman in charge.

She has yet to do anything major – make any significant change to society that has had a lasting & significant benefit – that will match some of our other “greats”.

That said, it’s possible that as we come out of Level 4 lockdown & survey the wasteland (as it were), her government MAY need to implement strategies & initiatives that will see that crieterion met, as opposed to just tinkering around “firefighting”.

This is what yet remains to be seen.

I needed fresh milk this morning. The queue at NW was the longest I’ve seen yet. Around the building and back to Main Road. Bugger that for a game of cowboys. Got 2 Ls from the dairy in 5 minutes.

Big ups to the dairy operators 👍🏼

          • Why not buy milk powder ?

I think that the unmitigated nuisance of waiting so long at the supermarket and having to go back every few days because of the limits is starting to anger people. It will be worse when we all have to wait in the rain.

Yes, I did that a couple of times a year or two ago, but
              1. The only choices at NW were full cream or trim milk powder & I prefer the Lite milk which has the creamy taste but isn’t so ‘fatty’, &
              2. I got lazy & would run out still run out of milk because I’d put off going to get some fresh milk as I had milk powder in the pantry.

If we get over this virus, I think will will need an inquiry as to what medical protocols were put in place for patients who died of Coronavirus. Medical authorities in MY OPINION should have had more than enough time to garner cutting edge protocols to treat patients.

Gobbledygook like that doesnt mean anything…’cutting edge protocols’ ha ! you cant just experiment on sick people…patients die all the time when they shouldnt and conversely can live when they ought to be dead.
If I was the age of these people who have died I would certainly refuse to even go on a ventilator- as maybe 60% die anyway and if you live even for young people walking and breathing can be very hard to do for weeks.
For older people there isnt enough time in your life left to recover and being bed ridden is more than likely

        That’s kinda why I suggested a debrief.

”If I was the age of these people who have died I would certainly refuse to even go on a ventilator- as maybe 60% die anyway.”

Fair enough. Were older patients given a choice? If so, who and why? If not, who and why?

Were standard protocols administered around the country.?

Where unorthodox modes of treatment administered? If so where? What were the outcomes comparative to other treatments.

Where untested drugs offered to our health services? Was UV light considered as a disinfectant?

How many patients died of oxygen toxicity?

The list is endless. Information will make us stronger in the continual control of Coronavirus, and any new strains that may appear.

A police spokesperson said the two men were handed warning letters after they were caught breaching lockdown rules in the town on Friday night.

The first man was spoken to at 10pm and the second at 11.20pm.

The warnings follow the arrest of a Timaru man on Thursday evening after he was caught breaking the rules for a second time. The man aged in his 20s was arrested at 11.30pm on Thursday after he was found to be walking a long distance from his home without excuse.

He is due to appear in court at a later date.”
