The USA now has more deaths related to the Covid-19 virus than an other country (current total 20,455 but rising about two thousand a day), but their death rate per 1m population is still a lot lower than Spain, Italy, Belgium, France and the UK.
Countries with the most deaths (Worldometer 9pm 12 April 2020 GMT)):
- USA 20,455 (61 per 1m)
- Italy 19,468 (322 per 1m)
- Spain 16,480 (352 per 1m)
- France 13,832 (212 per 1m)
- UK 9,875 (145 per 1m)
- Iran 4,357 (52 per 1m)
- Belgium 3,346 (289 per 1m)
- China 3,339 (2 per 1m)
- Germany 2,736 (33 per 1m)
- Netherlands 2,643 (154 per 1m)
Total deaths currently 108,333
Total recorded cases 1,771,543

Call me Ishmael...
/ 12th April 202080 pages of emails obtained by NYTimes. These are really worth a read: a heap of bureaucratic failure along with a total failure of political leadership.
The words ‘epic failure’ are not hyperbolic at all.

/ 12th April 2020A failure of Government? Well, I never!
Call me Ishmael...
/ 12th April 2020And political leadership. A heap of bureaucratic failure along with a total failure of political leadership – as I have been pointing out for over two months now.
Meantime the chattering masses have tried blaming the Democrats, the Chinese, the media, Obama, the CDC, the WHO, hospitals, medical workers, state governors, impeachment, and who knows else, for his 10 weeks of inaction from early January onwards.
Look at the emails and see for yourself what a clusterfuck at the expense of the American people looks like.
Pink David
/ 12th April 2020” Democrats, the Chinese, the media, Obama, the CDC, the WHO”
All have a large degree of blame to share.
“Look at the emails and see for yourself what a clusterfuck at the expense of the American people looks like.”
It will be no different in any government bureaucracy. That’s how they work. The fact you seem to expect anything better is very quaint.

Here is another, very small, but indicative of how governments actually work.

In the meantime 7 children died of flu last week in the US. No one noticed.
In the UK Police are searching people ‘shopping to judge if they are essential purchases. They order people into their homes for daring to being in their back yards.
This is what your panic and fear has unleashed.
Duker
/ 12th April 2020Even the Police chiefs in UK say that is being stupid and petty, as back yards arent restricted and what you buy if the shop is open is your own concern

/ 12th April 2020Does anyone believe the Chinese story anf numbers?

Pink David
/ 12th April 2020They are becoming more believable by the day.

/ 12th April 2020Maybe testing is just an unreliable distraction. The emphasis should be on contact tracing, isolation and clinical judgement since testing is fraught with false negatives:
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-11/false-negative-coronavirus-test-results-raise-doctors-doubts
Pink David
/ 12th April 2020The problem is the way the testing is being used. If they had used it to do some randomised sampling to establish exactly how widespread the virus was, that would have been useful.
Using it as a daily counter to compare to other countries is useless, and actually counter productive. There is no evidence that testing has achieve anything much other than inflate the ‘deaths with Covid-19’ numbers.

/ 12th April 2020Here’s a question. How does a country with the best health care, which has mobilised it’s entire establishment to treat this illness (Andrew Cuomo has stated not one single person has died in NY that could have been saved with the best healthcare) have so many deaths, yet China, with rudimentary health care, who were also slow to react to the virus have so few?
USA 20,455 (61 per 1m)
China 3,339 (2 per 1m)
Is China lying? Is the USA lying? Are they both lying? Do neither of them actually know?
Griff.
/ 12th April 2020You are talking yet more nonsense.
The USA does not have the best health care.
Not even close.
For tens of millions of Americans health care is an unaffordable luxury.
The USA rates 46 in the world for life expectancy and a similar position for infant mortally. .

Call me Ishmael...
/ 12th April 2020Well this is embarrassing. Real scientists (as opposed to President Trump) have sequenced the virus causing COVID19 in patients seeking care in New York hospitals and have found strong evidence of multiple, independent but isolated introductions mainly from Europe and other parts of the United States.
Guess you can’t call it a China virus or a Wuhan flu any more.

Alan Wilkinson
/ 12th April 2020The premise doesn’t justify the conclusion unless you have some evidence their original source was not Wuhan and that the connections between two areas comes with proof of direction of travel.
Call me Ishmael...
/ 12th April 2020I really don’t care. I’ve already given you a link to the science. Take your bs demand that I should prove a negative claim to the scientists:

Alan Wilkinson
/ 12th April 2020Not peer reviewed. I presume most of the authors merely contributed sample analyses and data. In fact many of the links it explicitly states carry no directional information. The conclusion that most came from Europe and Iran rather than direct from China is unsurprising considering the relative volumes of traffic into NY.
None of that is relevant to the appropriate name for the virus since all are minor mutations of the original infections from Wuhan.
Pink David
/ 12th April 2020Peer review takes time.
The really curious bit is the difference between NY and LA. Difference between Northern Italy and Southern Italy. Everywhere the deaths seem strangely localized.
Pink David
/ 12th April 2020This has been looked at intensely for while now. This paper indicates two strains with opposite treatments. This means Simpson’s Paradox has been causing great difficulty It is quite possible that the treatment methods for one strain are resulting in deaths for the other..

“Guess you can’t call it a China virus or a Wuhan flu any more.”
Your link does not support this claim.
Duker
/ 12th April 2020You dont understand the science Ishmael…the science says the original source was Wuhan before minutely altered versions started bouncing around the globe….the traffic from Wuhan was one way they even had direct flights to Sydney
The Chinese announced all this themselves some months back when they did the DNA…then they quarantined the city even within China.
