Open Forum Monday

This post is open to anyone to comment on any topic that isn’t spam, illegal or offensive. All Your NZ posts are open but this one is for you to raise topics that interest you, or you think may interest others..

If providing opinions on or summaries of other information also provide a link to that information. Bloggers are welcome to summarise and link to their posts. Comments worth more exposure may be repeated as posts. Comments from other forums can be repeated here, cut and paste is fine.

Your NZ is a mostly political and social issues blog but not limited to that, and views from anywhere on the political spectrum are welcome. Some ground rules:

  • If possible support arguments, news, points or opinions with links to sources and facts.
  • Please don’t post anything illegal, potentially defamatory or abusive.

FIRST TIME COMMENTERS: Due to abuse by a few, first comments under any ID will park in moderation until released (as soon as possible but it can sometimes take a while).

Sometimes comments will go into moderation or spam automatically due to mistyped ID, too many links (>4), or trigger text or other at risk criteria. If they pass muster they will be released as soon as possible (it can sometimes take hours).

Fun fact to kick the work week off for those lucky enough to still have jobs. It seems the world has been down this track before. Only back then nothing changed economically, nothing closed, no social distancing, no masks, no internet, no social media. Life went on as normal

The Hong Kong Flu (H3N2) of 1968, killed 1 million worldwide, and 100,000 in the US, most excess deaths being in people 65+ (via the CDC).

H1N1 is thought to have taken out 575,000 in its first year. Wonder when the dust settles if the world will do a shutdown ever again, I would guess next time they might isolate those susceptible to dying from it which probably would have been the smart move, in hindsight, with this one.

Actually, Michael Baker suggested that very early on – well before a lock down was imminent.

      • H1N1 killed 12,469 Americans from April 2009-April 2010, a full 12 months.

COVID-19 has killed over six times as many Americans — 79,696 of them — in 1/4 of the time, February-May 2020.

We didn’t have public health professors in 1968 to tell us how to panic properly.

By the time they got to Woodstock they were half a million strong. But not to worry, the organisers flew in 12 doctors to keep the thing at bay

Wow,things are not all they seem on rightwing Kiwiblog. There is a guest post by a director of a firm called Hydraulink Fluid Connectors with branches in NZ and Australia, long story short he praised Australia response and badmouthed New Zealand response. The Australian loving New Zealand directors name is Lee Short and he runs a rightwing group called “Democracy Action”.This fact isn’t mentioned so the guest post just appears as from a non partisan person.Sad really

Why is it sad? Posts & articles from partisan writers arecperfectly acceptable. What matters is how well or otherwise they state their case.

That why I can comment on it Gezza, maybe their clients dont know the director’s political views.

“maybe their clients dont know the director’s political views.”

What does it matter what a directors political views are if you are in need of a new hydraulic hose?

Well, exactly. I started out checking Whale Oil, Kiwiblog, The Standard & the Daily Blog before I discovered this one, where a select few of the intelligentsia seemed to come & have some good debates at times, where there is often humour, there are plenty of ‘characters’ & the moderation is light-handed & fair.

These days I rarely look at other blogs.

            • That is another gross distortion of David Seymour and ACT, and it’s ‘shoo in’. not ‘shoe in.’

Sweety Pook is standing atop the neighbour’s 6 foot streamside fence shrieking & stamping her foot becos she’s not happy the Pookden Café has finished serving breakfast & is demanding it reopen just for her & her pookling shadow. 🐧 🐧

Not going to happen, Sweety ! Give in & you’ll be demanding on the spot service every day. And stop stamping your foot. It’s injured, you’re still limping badly. You need to take care of it!

Honestly, the things I have to think about to bring these birds up properly ! 😎

Morning, Hopeless. I have a faint recollection of someone saying once that if you put a pinch of salt in the water that stops this happening.

Mrs Al will find out why I said to put her part eaten mothers day chocolate cake in the microwave not the oven to keep the ants from getting to it.

Because when you go to put your scones in the preheated oven and find the cake in it it is too late for the cake.

        Reply
    • If Hopeless puts some vinegar in the water, that should stop the egg running.

Alan, won’t the ants squeeze through the microwave door ? The little sods can find their way into almost anything except a tightly fitted lid.

I used to put a peg on the oven knob as a signal that there was something in there.

Years ago I got sick of getting the water to temperature and simply cracked it into to whatever the temperature in the tap then turned off prior to heavy boiling.. Seems to work.
