    https://www.stuff.co.nz/world/europe/121540706/european-leaders-are-blunt-coronavirus-vaccines-wont-come-soon-enough

Opening begins globally despite Covid still being about, leaders and their populations have hit the point where we are just going to have to live with this thing.

From (for Griff he is Left wing) Italy,s PM

“We are facing a calculated risk, in the awareness … that the epidemiological curve could go back up,” Conte said late Saturday. “We are confronting this risk, and we need to accept it, otherwise we would never be able to relaunch.”

Conte added that Italy could “not afford” to wait until a vaccine was developed. Health experts have said the world could be months, if not years, away from having a vaccine available to everyone despite the scientific gold rush now on to create a coronavirus vaccine – or vaccines.”

In reality stopping the health system from being overwhelmed was pretty much the only achievable goal. There was always going to be a second wave and if there isnt its because the virus is done and there was never going to be one and Sweden was the model to follow, with better protections for rest homes.

I am not left wing whatever that is .
The only political party I have ever been a paid up member of is ACT. I have a twenty year collection of signed Christmas cards from Roger D who I also know personally and have worked for in the past.
However I don’t believe that the average gibbering fuckwit you see on NZ blogs is actually right wing.
In my well considered opinion they are poorly informed nutbars living in lala land.

So Wilco came from Values Party and Griff comes from the ACT party…talk about raised eyebrows. And wasnt PG around NZ First ??

        • No.I am sure that PG was not with NZF.

Griff, are you still with ACT ?

We may well have met .My late husband was a founder member, but I don’t want to go into detail that may identify him here. I was one too, but not as involved. Roger has been to the house, and a friend and I once sang My Darling Clementine in Latin to him for some reason. I still have a signed copy of his book. Those were the days.

Conte isnt even a politician despite being PM, was a law professor who was a compromise candidate as an ‘independent’. Not left wing what ever you think that means in Italy
“Conte became the first Italian Prime Minister to lead separate governments with both right-wing and left-wing coalition partners”

            They mention 3 activist groups
‘ Committee has given advice regarding judges’
involvement with the American Constitution Society (“ACS”), the Federalist Society, and the American Bar Association (“ABA”)

            and their reasoning
“As we said in Advisory Opinion No. 93, a permissible law-related activity “is one
that serves the interests generally of those who use the legal system, rather than the interest of any specific constituency” and that “judicial participation in organizations that advocate particular causes rather than the general improvement of the law is prohibited.” Organizations advocating liberal or conservative causes clearly fall within this prohibition. The conclusion we reached 15 years ago, if anything, is more apt today than it was then:”

So that 15 years ago membership for federal Judges of partisan legal bodies was prohibited.
“This conclusion is buttressed by the nature of the factional missions of the ACS
and the Federalist Society. A reasonable and informed public would view judges
holding membership in these organizations to hold, advocate, and serve liberal or conservative interests. ”

So they are just reaffirming existing legal policy. the ABA is Ok as its mission is improvement of the legal system and not via a conservative or liberal approach.
            Nothing to see here.

Rationalising nothing, Duker. One is a lobbyist, the other a think tank. The Left want to ban the think tank.

               /  18th May 2020

Its not a ‘neutral’ think tank , its stated mission is partisan purposes, to push the conservative agenda as is the liberal legal group.
Nothing wrong with that , other than under the longstanding judicial code of conduct thats not where judges should be seen and heard

Except that the Govt has failed to action the necessary bureaucratic approvals so Auckland is now waterless with water all around it.

No, I knew you would find it here. Auckland has a huge rainfall most of which runs into its many harbours and one of our biggest rivers is just to the south. Hosking is correct. Lefty political/bureaucratic incompetence is solely to blame.

Us usual ‘out of towners’ dont how Auckland works
Same as when Brown was mayor complaints about jammed motorways, despite them being SH are a wellington responsibility.

It may be one city but the water mains were split into semi-separate Waitakere fed and Hunua fed systems. The Waikato river supply feeds South Auckland through the Hunua mains
So there was no way to get river water into West Auckland, North Shore and half the isthmus including CBD. They only come from Waitakere dams , which are the lowest levels.
The final stages of a new main from South Auckland through Mangere Bridge , One Tree Hill to the CBD will complete towards the end of the year. The Dry Summer – its not a drought- is here now not later this year.

Luckily I know about these things and can better inform you lot instead of relying an a radio presenter with no knowledge

All you are achieving is explaining how Auckland doesn’t work and isn’t able to move its supply across town – as well as not being allowed to take enough from the river. If true, double the incompetence.

The chicken has to follow the egg. It will be completed later this year at a cost of the 100s of millions.
Capital for both the waste water upgrades and fresh water supply isnt unlimited.
Auckland has grown faster in the last decade than expected and a very unusually dry event has (just) preceded it.
You cant complain , like at the problems you are in from relying on property development combined with tourism…shame on you for not 100% foresight or followed the maxim about eggs and baskets

NZ population has increased by 0.5 mill in the last 6 years , most going around Auckland. We have had population of Wellington added here in around 15 years
              That wasnt predicted.
I dont think what I have seen from NIWA said the dry Autumn/Winter would happen either . Not that they have ever got any medium term climate right either. – other than when its ‘same as last month’

    Breakfast Report

Had coffee with milk n sugar, a banana, a microwave-poached size 8 egg on a canolaed slice of NW Value wheatmeal bread, with 2 microwaved rashers of bacon, followed by another same-recipe coffee.

The pooks had their usual – bread chunks, grass clippings they clipped themselves, and either plain tapwater or sugar water, depending which bowl was free.

A heavy dew, nippy when still dark, but now a sunny & gorgeous-looking morning in North Welly.

Happily our local bakery has reopened today with croissants that are simply on a different plane from the supermarket variety. Lemon curd is my preferred sweetener.

The sun is coming out now so hopefully will warm up as I take the first big load of recyclables out to our transfer station/tip.

    Stuff today:

A Good Samaritan going to the aid of a man was threatened and forced from his car during a midnight car-jacking in Hamilton.

The alleged offender, a 28-year-old Mongrel Mob member, is due in court on Monday after stealing the car and leading police on a chase which ended in his arrest near Hamilton Airport on Saturday night.

The offender had gone to a home in Dixon Rd, Glenview, around 11.30pm, asking for help, saying his own car had broken down and he needed assistance. Waikato police Senior Sergeant Pete Simpson said the resident was a good samaritan who went to help the man out.

As the pair were going to the broken down vehicle, the offender threatened the resident and ordered him out of the car before stealing his Suzuki Swift. Simpson said the victim believed the offender was in possession of a weapon at the time.

Sonny Tau no doubt will be wanting his PR guru to have a word with this chap. 😕

That’s a bit unfair. Key didn’t go just for shock jock type ‘crew’ radio to catch the bird brains. He had a regular spot on Radiosport so he could call them ‘mate’ and they could call him ‘mate.

I’ll reserve judgement about his other mate Rachel Glucina and her intellectual material aimed at the highbrow people of Parnell, Remuera and Epsom. Not that I’m suggesting they’re to be classed as ‘useful idiots.’ ‘Useful’ might be taking it a bit far. 😊

            • I remember when she befriended Mick Jagger, and seemed to be under the illusion that he wouldn’t know that she was a reporter. He wasn’t silly enough to fall for her girlish pleas to have a photo taken of the two of them. I’d say that this was not the first time that someone had tried this on and that he was aware that she was a reporter from the beginning.

“Piers Morgan petition: 56,000 viewers urge ITV to fire Good Morning Britain presenter”

Now let’s overlook the fact the’ve taken a shot of the poor bastard with his fly undone but is it fair to pick on Piers? How could a man with such a beautiful missus be accused of poor judgement? Should he have the right to mock? Does he have a right to respond to foul-mouthed abuse, death threats & petitions to be fired?

    Apparently Not…

Hate crimes are on the rise, transphobia and discrimination over gender identity is becoming commonplace both upon social media and in the real world, and ITV continue to sit idly and let it play out in the name of entertainment

  8. Another conspiracy theory from the Trump administration appears to have fallen over … Pompeo knows his claim was batshit crazy – otherwise he wouldn’t have conceded this:

“Pompeo has for weeks publicly espoused the theory that the virus that has infected more than 1,400,000 Americans originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, claiming in an interview earlier this month that there was “enormous evidence” and a “significant amount of evidence” this was the case. He later conceded that he couldn’t be certain of its origin and that the evidence that it came from “the vicinity” of the Wuhan lab “could be wrong.””
