Covid hasn’t been getting as much attention here in New Zealand lately, with most interest in the US and President trump in hospital having caught the virus.
Most of the country has been at Alert Level 1, which means life as more or less normal.
But Auckland is still on Alert level 2. A decision will be made on whether that will be changed today.
Meantime Australia opening up some areas to travel from New Zealand, but there’s a complication – if you travel to NSW or NT you will still have to do 14 days isolation when you come back to New Zealand. If you go to Aus on holiday, who pays for your stay in Hotel Isolation when you come back? I don’t know if that has been addressed.
Duker
/ 5th October 2020‘pays for your stay in Hotel Isolation when you come back? I don’t know if that has been addressed’
This has been ‘addressed’ , holidays dont count for free isolation costs. Thats for returning kiwis who lived overseas, not for ‘going and coming back’ unless its bereavement etc
NOEL
/ 5th October 2020200 days since the Gummitt made the call for New Zealanders to come home.
12 cases in isolation from one flight.

/ 5th October 2020What surprises me is that so many Indians with permanent residency but not citizenship go on 5 month holidays to the motherland….something to do with days you have to be in NZ.
The South Africans are doing the same .
Makes me wonder if they have got ‘no show’ jobs in NZ that are just there for tick box application.
Kitty Catkin
/ 5th October 2020I don’t know any Indians who do that. I have met people who have summers on both sides of the world; who wouldn’t if they could ?
David
/ 5th October 2020Quite common Duker.
Its a lot tighter now but when National were in charge it was open slather and pretty appalling , with Labour getting work permits renewed for staff was tough and getting residency a lot harder but is being done by slow walking everything by immigration.
NOEL
/ 5th October 2020One does wonder where the allegiance lies.
NOEL
/ 5th October 2020Possibly related to Superannuation. Eligible after 5 years residency if over 50.
30 weeks overseas before pay back occurs.
Kitty Catkin
/ 5th October 2020!0 years since the age of 20, 5 of them to be when over 50, according to WINZ. The idea that people come here and get Super as a matter of course is an urban myth,
Blazer
/ 5th October 2020Granny dumping IS NOT an urban myth….its a real, pre meditated, manipulation of our Social Welfare system.
Old couple who were meant to be looked after by sibling who signed a stat dec, turn up at MSD…son gone to Australia, not hear from anymore,no money, what can…do?
Kitty Catkin
/ 5th October 2020Any proof of this ? WINZ doesn’t just hand out money ad lib, and they say that Super is for those who have been here for 10 years. I’d have thought that the oldies would just be sent back home.
Duker
/ 5th October 2020The get the unemployment benefit if they arent yet eligible for Super , plus top ups to cover medical and housing costs
When they have the 10 years ‘done’ for the super payment eligible they will join with son in Australia where NZ will continue to pay them weekly super . ( under the joint Aust -NZ agreement)
Kitty Catkin
/ 5th October 2020Granny dumping happens at hospitals; people leave oldies there and take off on holiday. That is a fact. But anyone who thinks that leaving the olds in NZ will get the olds a pension is dreaming, I would guess.
Blazer
/ 5th October 2020‘guessing’has always been a fatal flaw in your comments.
After proving their means people with PR can apply to bring parents here on the proviso they support them.
When they are ‘abandoned’,the NZ Govt does not deport them=inhumane.
Duker
/ 5th October 2020” anyone who thinks that leaving the olds in NZ will get the olds a pension is dreaming, I would guess.”
10 years previous residency plus be 65 or older , like I said, do you not understand easy to use words ?
https://sorted.org.nz/guides/retirement/about-nz-super/
This is why the move is to bump it up more years than 10 as the declaration some made when they sponsored their parents is worthless
NOEL
/ 5th October 2020I Should have used this reasoning.
“Generally, if you leave New Zealand for more than 26 weeks you may not be considered ordinarily resident in New Zealand. If you spend more time outside of New Zealand than inside you are also not considered to be ordinarily resident in New Zealand.”
Kitty Catkin
/ 5th October 2020I wonder if the farce of keeping Auckland on L2 will continue. It may well be a voter turnoff if it does, with no community transmission. The idea of keeping it up on the off chance is insane.
Corky
/ 5th October 2020So, after the PM went on and on and on…she got to the pertinent part. Auckland is back down to Level 1. Talk about a campaign speech. To be fair, the Left are spooked – National is fighting back.
Duker
/ 5th October 2020National is spooked by the dead political corpse of Bridges and Muller and Hamish Walker
The covid levels isnt mentioned at all by Collins and her merry cohort of losers for some weeks now. been there got burnt by that
The Auckland level change was ‘set up’ some 2 weeks back when they said well look again at the number its the science which says wait for 14 days for the conditions to settle.
Kitty Catkin
/ 5th October 2020Judith Collins has mentioned it, she talked about it today.

/ 5th October 2020Hey its a satire …. what was the ‘rest of the world’ bit ?…since Trump rubbished our ‘second surge’ the US has another 40,000 dead and theres candles in the windows for the Big Donald who may go the way of Big Norm.
Alan Wilkinson
/ 5th October 2020Not looking so good for Trumpy’s ill-wishers. But glad you now see the relevance of Big Norm to your heart’s desire.
Duker
/ 6th October 2020One detail was forgotten after 45 years , new information means I make allowances , dont you.
Works better now for Big Norm and Big Donald comparison. Sadly for me only one died after a few days ( of very poor care, just a few pills and a small maternity hospital he went for ‘bed rest’, but I suppose at the time options were limited)
Corky
/ 5th October 2020This is terrible. We are the laughing stock of the world.
Duker
/ 6th October 2020US has had 40,000 extra deaths since Trump said NZ is ‘terrible’ we had 3 …now look at who the world is laughing AT and saying Told you so.
Corky

/ 6th October 2020Just back from a trip down to Auckland. I can see our universities will soon if not already be offering advanced degrees in Road Cone Moving with supporting courses on Watching Road Works Not Happening and Obstructing Traffic.
