Jupiter and Saturn moon videos

Some great videos created out of still shots from the Cassini spacecraft as it flew by Jupiter and Saturn, showing orbiting moons.

Jupiter, Io and Europa

A photo taken from the Juno spacecraft of Jupiter and two of it’s approximately 69 moons, Io and Europa:

Io can be seen closer to Jupiter, at an altitude of 298,880 miles (481,000 kilometers). In the distance (to the left) Europa, is visible at an altitude of 453,601 miles (730,000 kilometers).

The image was taken on Sept. 1, 2017 at 3:14 p.m. PDT (6:14 p.m. EDT). At the time the image was taken, the spacecraft was about 17,098 miles (27,516 kilometers) from the tops of the clouds of the planet at a latitude of minus 49.372 degrees.

Both these moons are a similar size to our Moon, so that gives an idea of the relative size of Jupiter to Earth.

Jupiter has two larger moons, Ganymede and Callisto. Ganymede is larger than Mercury, and Callisto is slightly smaller than Mercury. The rest of Jupiter’s moons are much smaller.

If Jupiter was in orbit around Earth at the same distance as our Moon this is what the relative sizes would be:

Of course if they were that close Earth would be orbiting Jupiter. Earth (12,742 km) is over twice diameter of Jupiter’s largest moon Ganymede (5,262 km)
